US anti-missile ship to dock in Haifa
Source: Jpost
04 February 2008 – An American missile ship set to dock at Haifa Port on Monday is equipped with an anti-missile defense system that could be deployed in the region in the event of an Iranian missile attack against Israel.
The USS San Jacinto is an AEGIS cruiser in the Ticonderoga Class and was commissioned in 1988. It carries the most advanced underwater surveillance system available today and is equipped with the AEGIS missile defense system, which was developed by Lockheed Martin to protect against aircraft and missiles. The ship will remain in Haifa for three days.
While the IDF developed and operates the Arrow missile defense system, defense officials said Israel has expressed interest in the AEGIS and that last year, the Defense Ministry requested information on the system from the Pentagon. During the first Gulf War in 1991, the US deployed Patriot missile batteries in Israel to defend the country against Iraqi Scud missiles.
"It is possible that one day, if we are under attack, the US will send these ships to the region to help defend us," a defense official said. "Until then, it is important that we get to know the system, its capabilities and its interoperability with our systems."
The San Jacinto
can launch long-range surface-to-surface Tomahawk cruise
missiles, rocket torpedoes and standard surface-to-air missiles. The
heart of the AEGIS system is the SPY-1A radar system, which is
capable of detecting and tracking any aircraft or missile flying
within 320 kilometers. The ship has participated in operations in
Iraq and Bosnia.
04 February 2008 – Ships are not responsible for damaging undersea internet cables in the Mediterranean, Egypt's Government says.
Two cables were damaged earlier this week in the Mediterranean sea and another off the coast of Dubai, causing widespread disruption to internet and international telephone services in Egypt, Gulf Arab states and South Asia.
A fourth cable linking Qatar to the United Arab Emirates was damaged on Sunday causing yet more disruptions, telecommunication provider Qtel said.
Egypt's transport ministry said footage recorded by onshore video cameras of the location of the cables showed no maritime traffic in the area when the cables were damaged.
"The ministry's maritime transport committee reviewed footage covering the period of 12 hours before and 12 hours after the cables were cut and no ships sailed the area," a statement said.
"The area is also marked on maps as a no-go zone and it is therefore ruled out that the damage to the cables was caused by ships."
Earlier reports said that the damage had been caused by ships that had been diverted off their usual route because of bad weather.
A
repair ship is expected to begin work to fix the two Mediterranean
cables on Tuesday.
Comments: Four main communications cables cut in less than a week and all in different locations seems rather odd. No Ships were in those areas before and after the damage time, only adds to the mystery. It could be nothing of great concern but now that it is confirmed that ships (anchors) were not responsible for the damage the question remains, how did this happen? Is there more going on than what we are being told? Another interesting piece of information is… If we take a look at internet traffic in Asia, there is one noticeable country that has no internet traffic whatsoever…Iran. (Current Traffic Graph here). Is this a coincidence? We may find out soon.
On another note; (article) a US anti-missile ship to dock in Haifa for three days “that could be deployed in the region in the event of an Iranian missile attack against Israel”. Activity in the news concerning a confrontation with Iran may be starting to pick up and we should be keeping an eye on all these events.
