EU will only help Iran with peaceful nuclear programme, Solana says
Source: M&C

30 January 2008 – European Union foreign policy chief Javier Solana said Wednesday the bloc was willing to help Iran develop its nuclear programme, but not until it was convinced that such a programme was being carried out for peaceful purposes.

Solana's comments to the European Parliament followed calls from Iranian President Mahmoud Ahmadinejad for Western states to help his country build nuclear power plants.

'None of us have a problem with an Iranian civil programme, indeed we are offering to help. But none of us will do so unless we are certain that Iran's intentions are exclusively peaceful,' Solana told European lawmakers.

The High Representative for the EU's common foreign and security policy said he remained unconvinced about Iran's true intentions, noting that Iran continued to produce enriched uranium in spite of the fact that Russia was already supplying nuclear fuel to its planned Bushehr reactor.

'When I ask representatives of the Iranian government what they plan to do with the enriched uranium they are producing, I never get an answer,' Solana said.

'Even the suspicion that Iran is pursing a nuclear weapon can destabilize the Middle East. Our objective is to remove those suspicions,' he added.

In a speech delivered on Wednesday near the site of the reactor, Ahmadinejad said he would not make concessions over the country's nuclear drive despite pressure by world powers.

'The Iranian nation will resist the pressure and not withdraw one iota from its (nuclear) rights - if you (the West) believe that Iran would give in to pressure, then you are making a grave mistake,' Ahmadinejad said.

The foreign policy chief said the EU should continue to seek a negotiated solution to the nuclear standoff, 'in parallel' with initiatives being carried out at UN Security Council level.

The five permanent UN Security Council members plus Germany are currently discussing a draft resolution to impose further sanctions on Iran in the protracted dispute over its nuclear programme.

Ahmadinejad tells West: Accept Israel's 'imminent collapse'
Source: Haaretz

30 January 2008 Iranian President Mahmoud Ahmadinejad called on the West Wednesday to acknowledge Israel's "imminent collapse."

Speaking to a crowd on a visit to the southern port of Bushehr, where Iran's first light-water nuclear power plant is being built by Russia, Ahmadinejad further incited his listeners to "stop supporting the Zionists, as [their] regime reached its final stage." “Accept that the life of Zionists will sooner or later come to an end," the Iranian president said in a televised speech.

He added, "What we have right now is the last chapter [of Israeli atrocities] which the Palestinians and regional nations will confront and eventually turn in Palestine's favor."

Iran does not acknowledge Israel and Ahmadinejad has in the past sparked international outcry by referring to the systematic murder of six million Jews in World War II as a "myth" and calling for Israel to be "wiped off the map."

Iran is currently also mediating in the crisis over the Gaza Strip, where Israel has imposed a blockade on border crossings into the coastal territory, barring the entry of supplies into the already impoverished area. Last week, Palestinian militants blew holes in the barrier separating the Gaza Strip from Egypt, prompting hundreds of thousands of Gazans to pour into Egypt in search of supplies.

Ahmadinejad also urged the Western powers to help build nuclear power plants in his country saying it will be too late if they do not decide to do so immediately.

"If you will not come, this nation will build nuclear plants based on its own resources and when you come some four years later it will reject your request and not then give you any opportunity," he said.

"I am addressing leaders of two or three powers; do you remember I sent you message and told you to stop be stubborn? If you think that you can block the movement of Iranian nation, you are wrong," the Iranian president continued.

Comments:  update; Iranian President Mahmoud Ahmadinejad continues to thumb his nose at Israel and the West. Coincidently he was visiting Bushehr two days after the last shipment of fuel arrived at the nuclear power plant and threatened Israel’s existence once again. (Further) UN sanctions have so far failed to deter Iran and Javier Solana is still trying to reach some kind of deal to ease the standoff. Ahmadinejad stated today that the Iranian nation will resist the pressure and not withdraw one iota from its (nuclear) rights. Iran at this point seems like it is not going to budge inch.  Israel has been waiting patiently to see if the negotiations and sanctions would solve the issue but that avenue is fast slipping away as Iran progresses foreword. Israel will act when the time is right and God will not abandon them.

Note: Elam was the name of ancient Near Eastern kingdom in what is now southwestern Iran, beginning about 3100-3000 BC.

Southwestern Iran is where Bushehr is located.

Jer 49:37 For I will cause Elam to be dismayed before their enemies, and before them that seek their life: and I will bring evil upon them, even my fierce anger, saith the LORD; and I will send the sword after them, till I have consumed them:
