Bird Flu Spreads to Nearly Half of India's West Bengal State

23 January 2008 – Indian officials are struggling to contain a serious outbreak of bird flu that has spread across nearly half of the eastern state of West Bengal.
India's Farm Minister, Sharad Pawar, said Wednesday the virus has been detected in nine of the state's 19 districts. Neighboring states are being asked to send medical staff to help deal with the outbreak.
West Bengal officials have set a new target of slaughtering 300,000 chickens a day and increased the number of veterinary teams to 600.
Bird flu was first detected in the Birbhum District of West Bengal last week. Since then, more than 400,000 birds have been killed.
Health workers are fighting an uphill battle in the state, with many local villagers unaware of the bird flu and refusing to give up their poultry to be killed.
Health officials continue to travel door to door to raise awareness and take blood samples from villagers to test for the virus.
The neighboring state of Bihar has also ordered the slaughter of poultry, as a precautionary measure.
Both Sri Lanka and Nepal have banned poultry imports from India.
The World Health Organization calls India's outbreak serious. According to the WHO, bird flu has killed at least 218 people worldwide since 2003, mostly in Asia. But there have been no cases of human infection in India.
Comments: Bird Flu is becoming a serious problem in India and health workers are not having much luck containing the virus. Culling 300,000 chickens a day will certainly have an impact on the economy and will reduce a primary food source in poor areas. Because many local villagers are unaware of bird flu, this will increase the risk of human infection and an added risk of the virus mutating to a human to human disease. Overall, India is becoming overrun by Bird Flu cases and reports indicate that it is spreading rapidly throughout the country and elsewhere. The risk of a pandemic is a very real possibility. Continue to keep an eye on this disease because it is not going to go away anytime soon.

Noah’s Ark nestled on Mount Ararat

23 January 2008 – For the first time in the seven decade-long history of the search for the legendary Noah’s Ark, a Turkish-Hong Kong exploration team on Tuesday came out with “material evidence”, to prove that the Ark was nestled on Mount Ararat, Turkey’s highest mountain peak bordering Iran and Armenia.
A panel of experts, comprising Turkish authorities, veteran mountaineers, archaeologists, geologists and members of Hong Kong-based Noah’s Ark Ministries International, also displayed an almost one-metre-long peice of petrified wood before the media and specially invited international experts.
The experts claimed it to be a part of a long structure they had unearthed during their February-August 2007 exploration. “It is for the first time in the history of the Ark search that an exploration team is getting a material evidence and graphic documentation. This makes it not only a the significant breakthrough in the Ark-search, but one that is supported with the most substantial evidence in recent history,” the panel said.
The revelation is expected to open up a fresh chapter in the ongoing debates in the scientific community on the search for Noah’s Ark.
Narrating the genesis of their exploration on Mount Ararat, the mount which has a direct reference in Holy Quran (Mount Judi) and Bible, the panel said the search team had made several foiled attempts before unearthing the evidence at an altitude of 4,500-metres of the estimated 5,165 metre volcanic mountain.
“The structure was discovered in the interiors of an unusual cave. The 11.5m wide and 2.6m high white wooden texture was revealed after removing thick layers of volcanic ash on the cave wall,” panel members said at a press conference.

Eastern Turkey, Ararat is great prize for mountain collectors. Ark
sighting has often been reported from this mountain. The observation
of Vessel-shaped features in aerial photograph of Ararat had caused
a stir in the late 1950’s. However,
this is the first time
an exploration team is coming out with “material evidence”.
Comments: The bible tells us that the Ark came to rest on Mount Ararat, so really it shouldn’t be much of a surprise that an exploration team has brought back physical evidence. There have been movies and documentaries for years about the Ark in this location and this latest find could spark a renewed interest. Now that they have graphic documentation it would be interesting to see this footage taken on the mountain. Watch for this on TV (hopefully) sometime soon. The bible is a marvellous book.
