Yisrael Beiteinu leaves gov't over peace talks
Source: Haaretz

16 January 2008 – "I have informed the Prime Minster of our resignation from the coalition," announced Avigdor Lieberman, the Minister for Strategic Affairs and the head of the right-wing Yisrael Beiteinu Party, yesterday.

Speaking at a press conference yesterday morning he had called to make the announcement, Lieberman said, "I think my position was clear the entire time," refering to negotiations with the Palestinians. "A month before the Annapolis summit, we put out a document with red lines that clearly defined what we could tolerate and what we could not tolerate. It is important to explain why the negotiations over the core issues is critical for us. The territories are not an
obstacle to peace."

He also thanked Prime Minister Ehud Olmert for his fair treatment, honesty and openness. The Prime Minister's Bureau responded to the resignation by saying the prime minister thanked Lieberman for being a partner in the cabinet's actions in the security and social spheres, but emphasized there is no alternative to serious negotiations with the Palestinians in order to achieve peace.

"The cabinet set clear conditions that every future agreement will be subject to the guarantee of Israeli security," the Prime Minister's Bureau said in its statement. "In light of the diplomatic actions of late, differences in opinion with Lieberman and his party members led to his resignation from the government."

Lieberman sharply attacked the leadership of the Israeli Arab public, saying, "Our problem is not with the Palestinians, it is with Israeli Arabs. [Israeli Arab MKs] Ahmed Tibi and Mohammed Barakeh are more dangerous than [Damascus-based Hamas leader Khaled] Meshal and [Hezbollah leader Hassan] Nasrallah, because they operate from within."

Lieberman also said peace talks must address the issue of transferring the Israeli Arab population to Palestinian control.

Resignation of hardliners leaves Israel coalition in disarray
Source: The Independent

16 January 2008 – Avigdor Lieberman, the leader of the most right-wing party in Israel's coalition government, yesterday resigned in protest at the decision to hold talks with Palestinian leaders on the "core issues" in the conflict.

Mr Lieberman fulfilled his promise to pull the 11 Knesset members of his party, Yisrael Beiteinu, out of Ehud Olmert's coalition if Israel were to begin talks with the West Bank-based emergency Palestinian Authority on borders, refugees and the future status of Jerusalem, which it did on Monday.

The move came amid continued violence in Gaza during which a 13-year-old Palestinian boy, his father and his uncle were killed in an air strike that the Israeli military said had "unintentionally" had hit their vehicle.

The Moldovan-born leader, whose main base is among the million immigrants from the former Soviet Union, and who has frequently been accused of anti-Arab racism by his critics, said that he was against the concept of "land for peace". He added: "If we pull back to the 1967 borders, everyone should ask himself, what will happen the following day? Will the terror stop? Nothing will change."

Mr Olmert, the Prime Minister, has in fact made it clear that he is seeking a deal significantly modifying the 1967 borders, under which the largest West Bank settlements will remain in Israel. Mr Lieberman's move will reduce Mr Olmert's majority from 18 to a more fragile one of seven in the 120-seat Knesset, and may put pressure on the religious party Shas to follow suit. Shas has said that it will leave the government if the division of Jerusalem – a bedrock requirement of the Palestinian President, Mahmoud Abbas – is on the table.

Comments: Update; now that the right-wing Yisrael Beiteinu Party has left the government, this puts Ehud Olmert in a political bind. Olmert can’t discuss the core issues with the Palestinians because the division of Jerusalem is the main core issue and the sticking point of the whole peace process. If he continues, Shas will be next to leave the government and fold Olmert’s majority. Jerusalem is the red line that many in Israel’s will not cross and now Mr. Olmert has a decision to make. Olmert will most likely continue with the talks but now that a black cloud is hanging over the peace talks, the way forward is again looking very dim. Keep an eye on the Shas party.
