10,000 policemen to secure Bush visit
Source: Jpost
02 January 2008 – In one of the largest security operations in years, more than 10,000 Israeli police officers will secure US President George W. Bush's visit to Jerusalem next week, police said Wednesday. The three-day visit, which gets under way on Wednesday, will see a total of 10,450 police officers on the streets of Jerusalem to safeguard the president and his entourage during his stay, Jerusalem police chief Cmdr. Aharon Franco said at a police briefing.
No security threats against Bush have been received by police, Franco added. The police will be out in their largest numbers since the landmark 2000 Jerusalem visit of Pope John Paul II, and the 1998 visit of former US president Bill Clinton, Franco said. The total number of police forces to be deployed in Jerusalem during Bush's 48-hour visit to Israel even surpasses the 8,000 police officers that oversaw Israel's pullout from Gaza two years ago.
The visit, which has been dubbed by police as Operation Clear Skies, is expected to cause major traffic jams throughout the city as police close off central Jerusalem thoroughfares.
…
After his arrival on Wednesday afternoon, Bush will meet with President Shimon Peres at his official residence, and then head over to the prime minister's residence for an evening meeting with Prime Minister Ehud Olmert and joint press conference.
On Thursday, he will meet with Palestinian Authority President Mahmoud Abbas in the West Bank, where he will be making a quick trip by helicopter, and then return to Jerusalem for the evening. Bush is also expected to host Olmert and Abbas for a three-way summit meeting aimed at accelerating peace talks launched in the US in November on the conflict's core issues. Bush will visit Yad Vashem on Friday and then head to northern Israel by helicopter, before leaving the country.
Comments: 2008 could be a very prophetic year. This is the first time President Bush has travelled to Israel since being in Office and because of the security required, this is probably why he has never gone before. With one year remaining and like many presidents before him, he is bound and determined to help finalize and jump start a peace deal between Israel and the Palestinians. Also, Ynet is reporting that Talks with Bush to focus on Iran and this is a main issue because if you have been following the news, Iran is now saying, (article) Iran to Launch Reactor in Summer 2008. If this is the case, that would mean that Israel or the U.S. (or both) would have between now and the summer to take out Iran’s Bushehr nuclear power plant before it goes hot and before it is too late.

02 January 2008 – The price of crude oil soared to $100 per barrel for the first time yesterday in a trend that could feed through into higher petrol prices and delay an early cut in interest rates this year.
Aggressive buying by speculators, cold weather in the northern hemisphere and the falling US dollar helped to propel the price of oil to a record on the Nymex exchange in New York.
Crude oil — the raw material for petrol, diesel and heating oil and a major component in the manufacture of plastics and packaging — is a major determinant of costs for businesses.
A rise in the price of crude, as well as feeding through into fuel prices at the pumps, is likely to be inflationary and could slow the speed at which the Bank of England is able to cut the base rate this year. Mike Lenhoff, chief strategist at the stockbrokers Brewin Dolphin, said: “This will push up headline inflation. That will make it more difficult for the Bank of England to cut interest rates.”
The increase to $100 — which is also a psychological benchmark — adds to the growing signs of pressure on consumers. British Gas recently said that higher gas prices meant that bills for its 10 million customers might have to rise, while food inflation is threatening to push up the cost of the weekly trip to the supermarket.
The price of US light crude rose $4.02 to $100, with Brent crude, the British benchmark price, soaring above $98 per barrel for the first time. The cost of crude oil has tripled in the past four years on booming demand from fastgrowing Asian economies.
Comments: (2008) The New Year rang in with Oil at $100.00 a barrel and if the headline is any indication of where the economy might be heading, it is heading for a big squeeze. Now that the $100.00 mark has been reached it will be interesting to see what the price will be this time next year. We know that without oil the economy would collapse and with 1/3 of the world’s oil supply passing through the Persian Gulf, the danger signs are on the horizon. The headline above should read “A war with Iran will choke the economy”.
There are so many news articles that I am following at this time and it is hard to cover everything all at once. Israel, Russia, Iran, Iraq, Pakistan, Kenya, Oil, Bird Flu, Wild Weather and a number of other issues are making the headlines as we head into 2008. We will be keeping track of all of these issues as best as we can.
Happy New Year everyone!
