Irish PM eyes top EU job
Source: EU observer

08 January 2008 – Irish prime minister Bertie Ahern has let it be known that he would be interested in one of the EU top jobs when the posts comes up for negotiation later this year.

The Irish Times reports that when Mr Ahern was questioned about a possible Brussels position, he said:

"I have given no great thought to that. Most people who would know me would know that I am fairly much a home bird." But he added: "I like Europe, I like dealing with Europe. I have been dealing in the European Council now continuously - except for a very short period - for 21 years. And I like all of that."

Mr Ahern also pointed out that he is second only to veteran Luxembourg leader Jean-Claude Juncker when it comes to experience on the EU stage and that "maybe a small minority" of his colleagues "would like to see me give some of my time to a role."

In the second half of 2008, when France takes over the EU presidency, negotiations for the EU three major political jobs - president of the European Commission, president of the council and EU foreign minister - are set to begin.

Although the treaty contains a job description for each of the posts, the exact nature of the position is set to depend on the personality of the person, with the permanent EU president and EU foreign minister being essentially new jobs.

The trio of personalities - who will fill their posts in 2009 when the new EU treaty is supposed to come into force - is likely to be the result of some ferocious bartering between member states, taking into account country size, political colours and EU credentials.

Comments: The negotiations for the three top jobs in the European Union are set to begin in six months but people are already lining up for the prestigious positions. Nothing will be decided until later this year but it would be a good idea to keep track of all the applicants for the three positions and who might steer the 27 member countries over the next several years. The EU foreign minister position will top the three positions since it will hold the most clout but will this be reserved for Javier Solana who is currently the EU foreign policy chief? Keep an eye on all the candidates over the next few months because the top position may go to the one “whose look was more stout than his fellows”.

Da 7:20 And of the ten horns that were in his head, and of the other which came up, and before whom three fell; even of that horn that had eyes, and a mouth that spake very great things, whose look was more stout than his fellows.

Violence escalates ahead of Bush's Israel visit
Source: Guardian

08 January 2008 – Two rockets fired from Lebanon exploded in northern Israel before dawn today, according to the Israeli military, part of growing violence in the region ahead of a visit by the US president, George Bush.

Residents said at least three rockets landed, but the army confirmed only two. There were no injuries reported.

One rocket landed on the porch of a home in the town of Shlomi. Its owner, Simona Salamon, said: "It was such a big noise and my ears were ringing. It made a hole in the wall."

It was the second rocket attack on Israel from Lebanon since Israel's summer 2006 war with Lebanese Hizbullah guerrillas when Israel was bombarded with nearly 4,000 rockets, killing 40 Israeli civilians and 119 soldiers. More than 1,000 Lebanese, most of them civilians, were killed in Israeli retaliation.

Last June, two rockets fired by a previously unknown group, the Jihadi Badr Brigades Lebanon Branch, fell in Israel, causing minor damage but no injuries.

Israeli military officials said the same group probably carried out today's attack, although there has been no claim of responsibility.

The rocket attack follows several days of clashes between Israeli forces and Palestinians in the Gaza Strip and West Bank.

Comments: President Bush’s visit to Israel and the Middle East will certainly be the top of the news over the next few days. Already the tension seems to be simmering at the boiling point before he sets off for Israel on Wednesday. Two rockets from Lebanon into Israel today (Tuesday) and the incident with Iran on Saturday could be an indication that the visit by the U.S. president will be met with unhappy greetings from some parties. This will be an interesting visit to keep an eye on.
