24 January 2008 – World demand for oil and gas will outstrip supply within seven years, according to Royal Dutch Shell.
The oil multinational is predicting that conventional supplies will
not keep pace with soaring population growth and the rapid pace of
economic development.
Jeroen van der Veer, Shell’s chief executive, said in an e-mail to
the company’s staff this week that output of conventional oil and
gas was close to peaking. He wrote: “Shell estimates that after
2015 supplies of easy-to-access oil and gas will no longer keep up
with demand.”
The boss of the world’s second-largest oil company forecast that,
regardless of government policy initiatives and investment in
renewables, the world would need more nuclear power and
unconventional fossil fuels, such as oil sands.
“Using more energy inevitably means emitting more CO2 at a time when
climate change has become a critical global issue,” he wrote.
…
In an acknowledgement of the challenge of securing global acceptance
of the need to curb carbon emissions, the Commission President, José
Manuel Barroso, said that the Commission would consider the
possibility of taxing imports into the EU by countries that failed
to take equivalent measures to curb carbon emissions.
Mr van der Veer’s prediction that the oil industry would soon
struggle to deliver sufficient conventional oil and gas to meet
demand echoes growing concern from other oil bosses.
Comments:
Lack of oil on the world markets will be a major concern in the
coming months and years. Oil will have a major impact on the economy
and dictate food and commodity prices. Without a sufficient supply
of oil the world will be left with no other avenue but alternative
fuels to keep everything going but it may be too late to prepare for
that crisis. The simple truth is that the world is not ready for the
inevitable. It is hard to predict the price of oil in 5 to 7 years
time but a good guess would probably be double or triple the current
level. Already the oil industry is having a hard time keeping up
with demand and predictions from the oil bosses are painting a bleak
picture. If the oil chiefs are concerned and worried, then there is
a major crisis looming on the horizon. It is that simple.

Goods, people cross freely in Gaza border bazaar
Source: CNN
24 January 2008 – Tens of thousands of Palestinians jammed the Egypt-Gaza border region Thursday, picking up everything from camels to cigarettes in Egypt, a day after overrunning the border wall.
Despite international pressure from Israel and the United States, Egypt has made no moves to reseal the border but has prevented the Palestinians from going beyond El-Arish, the nearest town, which is 25 miles inside Egypt. Israeli and U.S. leaders have called on Egypt to regain control of the border region, citing concerns that terrorists and weapons may be coming into Gaza unchecked.
Israeli Prime Minister Ehud Olmert and Palestinian President Mahmoud Abbas may meet Sunday to discuss the situation in Gaza, but nothing has been finalized, Palestinian negotiator Saeb Erakat said. Egyptian Foreign Ministry spokesman Hassam Zaki told CNN Wednesday that the border would be open "as long as this is a humanitarian crisis."
"We are not opening the Rafah crossing just for everybody to cross -- we're opening it because it's a very dire humanitarian situation," he said. CNN's Ben Wedeman said there are more people bringing in goods and services from Egypt on Thursday than a day earlier when Palestinians blasted through the concrete and metal walls at the Rafah border crossing.
Comments: Now that the Gaza border is open to Egypt, Israel should hand responsibility of supplying food and electricity to the Palestinians over to Egypt. Israeli officials have privately expressed the view that the breach could provide an "opportunity" for Israel to abandon its responsibilities for the 1.5 million residents of the Gaza Strip. But the other concern would be the threat of Hamas or Islamic Jihad militants bringing explosives, rockets and other weapons intothe Strip. The latest reports say that the breach in the wall has been closed but we will have to wait and see how this is handled. Keep an eye on this developing story because Israel may decide that a ground operation is needed in Gaza.
Keep watching (Matt 24:42)!
Shalom!
