Israel probes new bird flu outbreak
Source: Breitbart

03 January 2008Israel was investigating a fresh outbreak of avian flu after 18 contaminated birds were found dead on Thursday at a kindergarten in a coastal town in the north of the country.

"This morning, 18 ducks, chickens and pigeons were found dead among a total of 25 birds held in a petting corner in a kindergarten in Binyamina," an agriculture ministry spokesman told AFP.

Tests discovered the presence of the H5 virus category, which only kills birds, unlike the highly pathogenic H5N1 sub-type of the virus that is dangerous to humans.

Experts were examining the infected birds to see if they had been infected with the H5N1 strain.

Authorities have banned the transportation of animals in a three-kilometre (two-mile) radius around Binyamina, a coastal town north of Tel Aviv, in a bid to prevent the spread of the virus, the agriculture ministry said in a statement.

Comments:  Israel doesn’t know if this is the H5N1 strain right now but this latest outbreak will be cause for concern. Egypt which is right next door to Israel is battling the deadly strain and just last month 4 people died as a result of the H5N1 virus. AP is reporting that this is the H5N1 strain (here) and Jpost is has now reported Thursday night that a four-year-old girl who attended the kindergarten had been hospitalized with flu-like symptoms (here).

Bird Flu is not headline news like it was when it first started but the potential for human to human infection is a worry for the world health organization. A quick search of google reveals that the virus is present in many countries of the world and continues to spread rapidly. Keep an eye on this scourge because it is not going away anytime soon.

Eight Gazans killed by IDF fire; Katyusha hits north Ashkelon
Source: Haaretz

03 January 2008 Katyusha rocket fired by Palestinian militants in the Gaza Strip on Thursday morning struck an open field in northern Ashkelon, the furthest distance a rocket has struck yet - traveling some 16.5 kilometers.

Also Thursday, at least eight Palestinians were killed by Israel Defense Forces fire in several separate incidents in the Gaza Strip, including at least four militants.

The rocket that struck Ashkelon was identified as a Grad-type Katyusha, 122 milimeters in diameter. Militants acquired the rocket from Iran and have used the type before in attacks on Israel.

In response, Israel Air Force warplanes struck a series of targets associated with terrorist activity in the Gaza Strip on Thursday.

The pilots who carried out the mission reported successful strikes on the targets, which included a weapons workshop belonging to Islamic Jihad in Gaza City, a building connected to a Jihad activist in the central Strip and a Hamas target in southern Gaza.

Though until now it was only the population immediately adjacent to the Gaza Strip that was in the immediate firing line, because of the extended range we could have as many as 250,000 Israelis in the firing line," said Mark Regev, spokesman for Prime Minister Ehud Olmert.

Also Thursday, three Qassam rockets hit the western Negev, one of them striking a Sderot home. The rocket damaged the windows of the house, and one woman was treated for shock. There were no damage or injuries in either of the other two attacks.

Comments: The Katyusha rocket is the same terror weapon that Hezbollah used in the war against Israel in 2006. Now that the Palestinians have fired this for the first time into Israel, Israel has responded with a harsh reply. A Katyusha fired from the Gaza strip could hit many population centres and Israel can not allow this to continue, however, short of a full scale Gaza invasion, it seems that there is not much Israel can do against this new threat. Meanwhile the Palestinians and Israelis continue to work toward a peace agreement and will be sitting down at the table again when President Bush comes to visit. If this rocket was meant as a message to Mr Bush’s visit and to try and derail the talks, (report here) then this will be an interesting visit to watch.
