Stocks Plunge Worldwide on Fears of a U.S. Recession
Source: NY Times

21 January 2008 – Fears that the United States is in a recession reverberated around the world on Monday, sending stock markets from Frankfurt to Bombay into a tailspin and puncturing the hopes of many investors that Europe and Asia will be able to sidestep an American downturn.

On a day when United States markets were closed in observance of Martin Luther King’s Birthday, the world’s eyes were trained nervously on the United States. Investors reacted with what many analysts described as panic to the multiplying signs of weakness in the American economy.

Shares of banks led the decline in many countries, underscoring that the subprime crisis continues to hobble the global financial system. On Monday, a big German state bank, WestLB, said it would report a loss of $1.4 billion in 2007 because of its exposure to deteriorating mortgage assets.

“There is indeed some panic,” said Thomas Mayer, the chief European economist at Deutsche Bank in London. “What we’re seeing, in Europe and Asia, is that the markets are pricing in a recession.”

The sell-off was evenly distributed from West to East, with indexes plunging in London, Paris, Frankfurt, Tokyo, Hong Kong, Seoul and Bombay. The Frankfurt Stock Exchange’s Dax index plummeted 7.2 percent, its steepest one-day decline since Sept. 11, 2001. The 7.4 percent drop in Bombay’s Sensex index was the second-worst single-day tumble in its history.

Comments: All eyes will be on the U.S. Dow industrial tomorrow (Today) as stock markets around the globe are starting to feel the pinch of recession. Dow futures fell 546 points or 4.5 percent. If the futures do not retrace materially before the market's open on Tuesday and the Dow closes the day down by the amount that the futures suggest, the index would see its fourth largest point loss ever. People are certainly nervous about a potential recession in the U.S. spilling over to the rest of the world. Today Investors dumped shares because they were skeptical that an economic stimulus plan President Bush announced Friday would shore up the economy that has been battered by problems in its housing and credit markets. Keep an eye on the markets and see how things progress.

Khamenei snubs Iranian president
Source: BBC News

21 January 2008 Iran's supreme leader has overruled its president by ordering him to implement a law to supply gas to remote villages.

Iran is having its coldest weather in years and parliament had ratified a law to release extra funds to supply gas to rural areas undergoing shortages.

But Mahmoud Ahmadinejad refused to implement it, prompting the speaker to appeal to the supreme leader.

A BBC correspondent says Ayatollah Ali Khamenei's action is a rare public humiliation for President Ahmadinejad.

Jon Leyne in Tehran says President Ahmadinejad has come in for growing criticism over his handling of the crisis.

The main problem has been shortage of gas, which has led to gas pressure being lowered, or supplies cut off altogether in some places.

The supreme leader agreed that the law should be implemented and his letter ordering that it should was read out in the parliament.

Threat of war

About 64 people are reported to have died and tens of thousands have been stranded by severe blizzards.

The temperature has fallen as low as -24C and for the first time in living memory there has been snow in the country's southern deserts.

Comments: update; the cold snap continues in Iran and with gas shortages in the country, this is not an easy winter for remote villages. Ayatollah Ali Khamenei's ruling over President Ahmadinejad opposition to supply gas to these villages will be added to the list of criticism against the president. This also may raise speculation that Ali Khamenei’s support for the president is cooling. Iran will be holding parliamentary elections in March and Ahmadinejad’s conservative supporters could face tough competition in the parliamentary polls. This is a sensitive time for Iran and now that there are signs that a power struggle might be coming, keep an eye on Iran as the March elections approach.
