Iranian Revolutionary Guard Boats Threaten U.S. War Ships In International Waters
Source: Headline News

07 January 2008 – There was reportedly an incident involving harassment of United States warships by Iran in the international waters of the Strait of Hormuz on Saturday.

U.S. officials say that three U.S. Navy war ships were harassed and provoked by five Iranian Revolutionary Guard boats.

The Iranians made threatening moves, advancing their boats toward the U.S. warships while also making threats over radio transmissions.

On one of the radio transmissions the Revolutionary Guard said, "I am coming at you. You will explode in a couple of minutes," U.S. officials told CNN.

At that point the U.S. warships manned their gun stations and almost fired on the Iranian Revolutionary Guard boats before the Iranians stopped advancing and turned away.

This all happened in outside of Iranian territorial waters in international waters in the Persian Gulf, which all nations are free to use. It is also a strategic water way through which much of the world's oil passes through on its way out of many oil producing states to the rest of the world.

Comments: All it would take to start a full blown war with Iran is an incident like this one that gets out of control. Why Iran would be provoking 3 U.S. war ships with nothing more than 5 speed boats? In October 2000, the USS Cole, a guided missile destroyer was attacked by a small craft with a suicide bomber on board and Seventeen sailors were killed and thirty nine others were injured in the blast. That incident is still freash in the U.S. memory and I suspect that Iran was threatening to use the same tactic and provoke the U.S. warships into action. Iran is playing a very dangerouse game and with tensions already at the boiling point it wouldn’t take much at all for the next event to escalate. I’m sure everyone is keeping an eye on Iran to see what the next move will be.

Nevada Town Submerged in Frozen Floodwater; 9 Missing in Western Storms
Source: Fox News

07 January 2008 – Hundreds of homes sat in as much as 8 feet of water Sunday following a canal rupture as freezing weather spread sheets of ice over yards and streets, hindering efforts to get the water to drain away.

Nearly 300 homes were damaged when the canal's bank gave way following heavy rainfall produced by the West Coast storm system that had piled snow as much as 11 feet deep in the Sierra Nevada.

Thousands of customers were blacked out across the West and many of them in California could remain in the dark for days because the storm ripped down nearly 500 miles of power lines, utility officials said Sunday.

More than 145,000 homes and businesses in Northern California and the Central Valley were still without power Sunday, down from more than 215,000 earlier in the day, ahead of rain and snow that were forecast to return again soon.

Six snowmobilers and two skiers were reported missing in heavy snow in the mountains of southern Colorado, and one hiker was missing in snow-covered mountains in Southern California.

At least three deaths were blamed on the storm.

As much as 3 feet more snow could hit higher elevations of the Sierras by Tuesday evening, the National Weather Service said. Parts of Northern California will get a reprieve from the rain and snow on Monday, but in the mountains, "there's a chance of snow and snow showers all the way through Thursday," said weather service meteorologist Angus Barkhuff.

Comments: More wild weather and this time California is taking the brunt of it. One or two feet of would be considered a major snow storm but eleven feet is just incredible and with as much as 3 more feet on the way that is mind boggling to say the least. In Canada where I am we have had more snow this year than in the last 10 years but now all of a sudden it has turned unseasonably warm and everything is melting. So warm in fact that the temperature the last two days is at least 18 oC (Celsius) 64 oF higher than normal our normal minimum average for this time of year. Very strange weather patterns all over.
