Iran Receives Russian Nuclear Fuel
Source: AP
17 December 2007 – Iran received its first nuclear fuel from Russia on Monday, paving the way for the startup of its reactor in 2008.
Both the U.S. and Russia said that with the shipment, the Iranians would no longer have any reason to produce enriched uranium that could be used to build a nuclear weapon.
But Iran said it would continue its enrichment activities at a separate facility, in the central city of Natanz, to provide fuel for another nuclear reactor. Not only that, it indicated that construction had begun on just such a reactor, in Darkhovin in southwestern Iran.
"We are currently constructing a 360-megawatt nuclear power plant in Darkhovin," Vice President Gholam Reza Aghazadeh said on state television. Previously Iran had always described the Darkhovin plant as being in the planning stages.
Aghazadeh said it will take several more years for Iran to install 50,000 centrifuges in Natanz, an industrial-scale enrichment plant, to produce the fuel needed for Darkhovin. Tehran says the enrichment program is part of an effort to generate electricity, but the United States fears it will lead to weapons development.
After initial opposition, the U.S. now publicly supports Russia providing uranium fuel to Iran so long as Moscow retrieves the used reactor fuel for reprocessing, as stipulated in an agreement between Russia and Iran.
"If that's the case — if the Russians are willing to do that, which I support — then the Iranians do not need to learn how to enrich," Bush said in Fredricksburg, Va. "If the Iranians accept that uranium for civilian nuclear power, then there's no need for them to learn how to enrich."
Bush also reiterated his view that "Iran's a danger to peace," despite a recent U.S. intelligence estimate that found Iran halted a nuclear weapons program in 2003.
Russia starts nuclear fuel deliveries to Iran
Source: Guardian
17 December 2007 – Iran passed a significant milestone in its quest for nuclear power status yesterday when it received a first delivery of enriched uranium from Russia, allowing for the completion of a long-delayed reactor at Bushehr.
The head of Iran's atomic energy organisation, Gholamreza Aghazadeh, announced that 80 tonnes of fuel had been received, with further consignments expected in the next two months.
…
It also means Iran is just months away from having its first nuclear power station, after years of delays. The Russian contractors building the Bushehr plant, which will be used to generate electricity, say it could be operational within six months.
Comments: Urgent! Now that Iran is receiving nuclear fuel from Russia, Israel and the United States now have a window to halt Iran’s nuclear quest to build an atomic bomb and that window is now 6 months. Iran has refused to halt their Uranium enrichment program and this is a clear sign of Iran’s intentions.
The Bushehr plant going operational is the last step that Iran would need to complete the task for a bomb and once the plant becomes operational it would be a catastrophe to hit their hot reactor, the result would be similar to Chernobyl. The stakes have now been raised and the urgency has never been greater to stop Iran. 6 months is all they have to end this nuclear nightmare and safeguard Israel’s survival. The clock starts ticking today.

Cabinet okays renewing controversial Temple Mount Mugrabi excavation
Source: Haaretz
17 December 2007 –
The Israel Antiquities Authority (IAA) has been
instructed by the cabinet to continue its work at the Mugrabi
walkway near the Western Wall in Jerusalem.
The cabinet recently instructed the IAA to complete the work
"as soon as possible, with full transparency and with the
cooperation of the relevant bodies."
Excavations at the site, a walkway leading to the
Mugrabi Gate at the Temple Mount, were halted in June after they
raised an international protest. At the end of September, following
a report in Haaretz that the Ministerial Committee for Jerusalem
Affairs had approved the continuation of the work, Science, Culture
and Sport Minister Ghaleb Majadele
appealed the
decision to the cabinet secretariat and it was frozen.
Two weeks ago, Majadele acceded to Prime Minister Ehud Olmert's
request to withdraw his appeal.
17 December 2007 – Archaeologists with the Israel Antiquities Authority (IAA) were told by the cabinet on Sunday to resume their excavations at the Rambam (Mughrabi) Gate leading to the Temple Mount in the Old City of Jerusalem, with all due haste.
They were also told
to work with "full transparency" and in coordination with "relevant
bodies" so as to complete construction of a new permanent foot
bridge to the Western Wall as soon as possible. The bridge is to be
used by visitors and also by police. Work being carried out to
replace the current walkway, which partially collapsed in a storm in
2004, was halted in June in response to rioting by
enraged Muslims
who claimed the work was a plot to weaken the foundations of the Al
Aqsa mosque.
The construction site is located 60 meters away from the mosque and
was found by numerous Israeli and international engineers to be no
threat to the structure. Nonetheless, a new plan was proposed by
Jerusalem planning officials that called for a shorter bridge along
the existing route, and which would require less excavating and
fewer pillars. A budget of NIS 3.5 million has been allocated for
the project.
…
The status of
Jerusalem and its holy sites has become a major sticking point in
negotiations with the Palestinian Authority, which has insisted
Israel hand over half of the city – including the area being
excavated -- for use as the capital for a new PA state.
