Russian 'bear' who loves Black Sabbath set to succeed Putin

10 December 2007 – The man backed by Vladimir Putin for next year's presidential election is a heavy-metal loving 42-year-old whose surname comes from the Russian word for 'bear'.

First Deputy Prime Minister Dmitry Medvedev was nominated by the ruling United Russia party and three other smaller pro-Kremlin parties on Monday afternoon. President Putin later said on national television: "I have known Dmitry Medvedev well for over 17 years, and I completely and fully support his candidature."

In view of Putin's high popularity rating and full support of most of the legislature, his backing of the nomination is likely to guarantee Medvedev the presidency.

Medvedev's surname comes from the Russian word 'medved', meaning bear, an animal which has long been associated with the country. The bear is also the symbol of United Russia, and Bear bombers have contributed to increasing tension between the West and Russia of late with their strategic long-range patrols.

In a recent interview with the Russian magazine Itogi, Medvedev revealed his passion for rock music, saying that, "vinyl really sounds better than CDs."

The man who may well become leader of the largest nation on Earth said he had spent much of his youth compiling cassettes of popular Western groups, "Endlessly making copies of Black Sabbath, Led Zeppelin and Deep Purple."

All these groups were on state-issued blacklists during Medvedev's Soviet-era schooldays.

"The quality was awful, but my interest colossal," he said.
 

Comments: Russia got the nickname “the bear” probably from the bear bombers that flew continuously during the cold war. The Tu-95 (Tupolov) NATO nickname “Bear” is still a symbol of Russian airpower and as we have read in the news, Putin has resumed the Bear patrols after 15 years.

Some students of Bible prophecy would like to think that the “bear” mentioned in Daniel 7:5 is Russia due to their connection with that name but this is not the case. Most experts believe that the Medo-Persian Empire was the bear mentioned in this scripture. Persia after conquering Babylon extended the territory beyond that of Babylon. The armies of Cyrus were made of two main groups, Persian and Medes. Most view the three ribs as the conquests of Egypt, Lydia and Babylon by the Medo-Persian Empire.

Having said that, Gog (Russia) still has its place in end time prophecy and even though Russia is not the bear in Daniel 7:5, Russia is front and centre in Ezekial chapters 38 & 39. Dmitry Medvedev is the next up and coming President and will probably be there for quite a few years to come. In Dmitry Medvedev’s case, it isn’t the connection with Bear that got my attention as much as Russian 'bear' who loves Black Sabbath set to succeed Putin.

Why Gordon Brown must attend the EU Reform Treaty signing in Lisbon

10 December 2007 – With only three days to go, Gordon Brown is keeping all Europe guessing: will he or won't he attend the signing of the EU Reform Treaty in Lisbon?

His spokesmen insist there's nothing more sinister behind his equivocation than a clash with a long-agreed appearance before a Commons committee.

At best, this administrative muddle adds to the impression of mismanagement and indecisiveness that has dogged the Prime Minister for two months.

At worst, it looks like a feeble and cynical attempt to distance Mr Brown from a deeply unpopular measure which he is pushing through without public consent.

A poll today underlines just how little the British people want the Lisbon treaty, which revives the rejected European Constitution under a new name.

Almost three-quarters say they want the referendum promised by Labour at the last election. Nearly half would prefer a looser relationship with the EU, and 23 per cent want to withdraw altogether.

But nothing will now change Mr Brown's mind. Whether the PM goes to Lisbon or not, Foreign Secretary David Miliband will sign the treaty on Britain's behalf.

Since the decision to defy public opinion was Mr Brown's alone, shouldn't he attend the signing - and so prove he is man enough to take full personal responsibility?
 

Comments: On Thursday the 27 European Union members will sign the reform treaty and set in motion the final drive for an EU super state. Gordon Brown may not attend the signing ceremony because he is deeply embarrassed over not allowing a referendum on this treaty. The British public would have turned down the EU treaty if it had gone to a referendum and now they are being dragged into the binding EU treaty kicking and screaming. It will be interesting to see if Mr Brown attends this Lisbon ceremony but it won’t stop the treaty if he doesn’t attend. As far as I know, only Ireland is having a public referendum and it is expected to pass when they do.

The EU Fortress (fourth beast) is rising and nothing is standing in the way.
