Ontario, Quebec wallowing in massive snowfall
Source: National Post

16 December 2007 Freezing rain, snow, and heavy winds have started to smother southern Ontario as a potentially record-breaking storm heads north and east from the United States. People were being advised to stay indoors Sunday as the storm created havoc on the highways."Stay at home," Const. Kevin Davidson of the Ontario Provincial Police said Sunday morning. "Don't travel unless you have absolutely have to."Const. Davidson said visibility on Ontario's Hwy. 401 was down to less than 15 metres in some spots.

Seven tractor trailers and several cars were involved in a crash Sunday morning in the Cornwall area and the 401 westbound lanes were shut down because of it. It was not known when the highway would reopen. There were no injuries.Vehicles were colliding and sliding off roads all morning, said Const. Davidson. Between 5 and 10 a.m. there were more than 30 accidents in Eastern Ontario alone, the OPP reported. "It's a mess," he said. "It's a good old fashioned winter mess." Severe weather warnings remain in effect for parts of British Columbia, Ontario, Quebec and the Maritimes.

Snow started falling early Saturday afternoon, beginning what Environment Canada predicts could 40-centimetre snowfalls across region. Wind gusts at Hamilton Munro Airport have been measured at 60-70 km/h, and 20-30 centimetres of snow are expected to fall on Ontario right through to the Maritimes Sunday morning and afternoon. Lows ranging from -9 C to -23 C are being reported across the eastern half of the country. Near 25 millimetres of rain can be expected along coastal sections of the Atlantic coast. With up to 40 in the extreme southwest.

Meanwhile Southeast winds up to 90 km/h have developed on Vancouver Island and the Sunshine Coast. Provincial assistance has been pledged to tiny Prince George, where at least 12 businesses and 13 homes have been evacuated due to flooding, because of a six-kilometre-long ice jam, which forced the city to declare a local state of emergency earlier in the week.

Environment Canada says the blow heading across the Eastern half of the country could be the worst storm in the region in over 60 years.

Comments: It is not very often that I get to report on a record storm that I am right in the middle of, but we got hit pretty hard by this storm where I am in Ontario. There was so much snow that I had to shovel the snow off of my rooftop and spent another 6 hrs clearing the neighbour and myself out of this mess and that was with a snowthrower and shovel. Up here in Ontario, we are used to lots of snow but I have never seen so much snow this early in the winter season. With all this snow there will be flooding in the spring. Last year at this time there was not even one snowflake on the ground.

I am sure there are a few more readers out there who went through this same storm and have their own stories to tell. This system will be in the record books as the winter storm of 2007. Tomorrow after I recover I’ll be back to the regular reporting.
