Police to decide Sunday whether Olmert should be indicted for fraud
Source: Haaretz
21
November 2007 –
The team of
detectives investigating Prime Minister Ehud Olmert's possible
corruption in the sale of Bank Leumi is expected to decide by Sunday
whether the evidence gathered in the case justifies charging him.
Olmert, who was serving as finance minister at the
time of the sale, is suspected of interfering in the privatization
of the bank to benefit a friend.
The team of detectives from the National Fraud
Investigation Unit will hold a hearing on the matter with head of
police investigations and intelligence Major General Yohanan Danino,
and will subsequently make their conclusions public.
After a decision
is reached, the case file and the evidence included in it will be
handed over to the prosecution.
Sources involved in the investigation reported
that the decision whether or not to indict the prime minister will
be influenced by the legal recommendations of the police and the
state prosecution regarding how strongly they believe the evidence
could lead to a fraud conviction.
Comments: Update; if Olmert is indicted for fraud there would be a parade of Knesset MP’s calling for him to step down and resign. Sunday is probably the day Olmert will travel to Annapolis and if fraud charges are filed against him that will dampen any decisions he will make in Annapolis and weaken him considerably. If an indictment against the prime minister is not recommended there are still three more cases that remain open and pending against him. Olmert is still in hot water until he is cleared of all the other cases. For now, Lets see what the Israeli police decide on Sunday and keep an eye on that decision.

Oil tries for $100, then retreats
Source: CNN
20 November 2007 – Oil prices nearly touched a $100 a barrel Wednesday on declining U.S. supplies, a falling dollar and refinery outages, but later retreated after failing to breach the elusive triple-digit mark.
U.S. crude for January delivery settled at $97.29 a barrel, down $0.74 from Tuesday's closing price of $98.03 a barrel.
The intra-day floor high was $98.70. The intra-day Globex (electronic trading) high was $99.29.
In its weekly report, the Energy Information Administration said crude stocks fell by 1.1 million barrels last week. Analysts were looking for a gain of 800,000 barrels, according to a Dow Jones poll.
Distillates, used to make heating oil and diesel fuel, slid by 2.4 million barrels while gasoline supplies rose by 200,000 barrels. Analysts were looking for a 400,000 barrel decline in distillate supplies and a 700,000 barrel increase in gasoline stocks.
US dollar weaker after more bad news about housing, lending markets
Source: CNN
21
November 2007 –
The US dollar
was weaker against major currencies in midmorning trade in Sydney on
Wednesday, extending overnight losses as investors digest more bad
news about the banking and housing markets in the US and interpret
comments from the Federal Reserve as suggesting further interest
rate cuts are on the way.
The greenback was friendless after mortgage lender Freddie Mac (NYSE:FRE)
reported a record quarterly loss of 2 billion US dollars due to
rising defaults and an analyst downgraded Countrywide Financial Corp
(NYSE:CFC) , fuelling credit market concerns.
The Federal Reserve also lowered its forecast for economic growth
next year to 1.8-2.5 percent from 2.5-2.7 percent and nudged up its
unemployment forecast to 4.8-4.9 percent from about 4.75 percent.
The greenback is also under pressure from increasing speculation
the Arab states of the Persian Gulf will revalue their currencies
against the US dollar and replace the peg with a basket of
currencies.
Comments: Update; Oil continues its assault on the $100.00 mark as the U.S. dollar continues to decline. If the Arab states decide to un-peg from the dollar, that could drive the dollar down even further. By next week Oil will probably surpass the $100.00 mark and after that it is hard to say how high it will go. Already there is talk of recession in the U.S. and this spooked the markets in the last couple of days and has driven Gold and oil up to the current levels.
Where does it all go from here?
