Major quake strikes northern Chile; 2 dead, thousands of houses
damaged
Source: News Space
13 November 2007 – A major earthquake crushed cars, damaged thousands of houses and terrified people for hundreds of miles around Wednesday. Authorities reported at least two deaths and more than 100 injuries.
The quake, which struck at 12:40 p.m., shook the Chilean capital 780 miles to the south of the epicenter, and was felt as far away as the other side of the continent - in Sao Paulo, Brazil, 1,400 miles to the east.
The U.S. Geological Survey calculated the magnitude at 7.7. It was followed by several aftershocks, including three larger than magnitude 5. The University of Chile's Seismological Institute put the epicenter near Quillagua, a tiny desert village in the foothills of the Andes. No reports from Quillagua were available Wednesday.
Two women were killed in the town of Tocopilla, 25 miles from the epicenter, when their houses collapsed, authorities said. Hospital director Juan Urrutia said at least 100 people were treated there for injuries or panic. Tocopilla Mayor Luis Moyano said 1,200 houses were badly damaged there.
About 10 road workers were trapped near Tocopilla when a section of a tunnel they were repairing collapsed, but all were in good condition and rescuers were working to free them, according to the government's emergency bureau.
In the port city of Antofagasta, 105 miles south of the epicenter, police Capt. Javier Carmona said at least 45 people were injured. The mayor of nearby Maria Elena, Eduardo Ahumada, said 20 others were injured there and most of the town's 1,800 houses were damaged.
But reports were incomplete as government ministers boarded flights to the area and President Michelle Bachelet's spokesman said she would fly to northern Chile on Thursday.
…
A 1939 quake in Chile killed 28,000 people and in 1960, a magnitude-9.5 quake - the strongest recorded in the 20th century - killed 5,700 people. On June 13, 2005, a magnitude-7.8 quake near Tarapaca in northern Chile killed 11 people and left thousands homeless.
World race to stock up on the antiviral drug
Source: Times Online
13 November 2007 – Britain has sizeable supplies of a drug that would save lives in the event of a flu pandemic resulting from H5N1, although not every expert agrees that it would be enough in the event of a pandemic.
Governments are collecting Tamiflu, an antiviral drug, amid a world shortage. The fear is that the H5N1 virus could mutate into a strain that infects humans and spreads.
The Health Protection Agency has said that the Department of Health has enough to protect a quarter of the population.
Hugh Pennington, a professor of bacteriology at Aberdeen University, said that giving the drug to everyone would be a “complete waste of money”. He said: “Tamiflu does not really protect the population. It treats [those] who are sick. We would not expect everybody to get ill in the event of a pandemic.”
…
“There are warehouses all over England storing Tamiflu,” a spokesman for the Health Protection Agency said. “There are two reasons to have a stockpile — in the event of an epidemic of flu and in the event of a pandemic.”
Comments: Another major earthquake is in the news and this time it was in Chile. There is no doubt that major earthquakes are increasing in size and scope all over the globe in the last few years. To get a good idea of how often earthquakes are occurring go here to the Earthquake Seismic Monitor web page.
Keep an eye on the spread of Bird Flu. The world is racing to stock up on Tamiflu for good reason.
Lu 21:11 And great earthquakes shall be in divers places, and famines, and pestilences; and fearful sights and great signs shall there be from heaven.
