Vatican-Orthodox commission agrees on primacy of Pope; differ on significance
Source: The Canadian Press

15 November 2007 – A joint commission working to heal the 1,000-year split between the Catholic and Orthodox churches has agreed the Pope has primacy over all bishops but disagrees over just what that authority permits him to do.

The Joint International Commission for the Theological Dialogue reached the agreement during talks last month in Ravenna, Italy, according to a document being published Thursday.

The Roman Catholic and Orthodox churches were united until the Great Schism of 1054, which was precipitated largely by disagreements over the primacy of the Pope.

Tensions remain strained over Orthodox accusations that the Vatican is seeking converts on traditionally Orthodox territories, particularly in eastern Europe - allegations that Rome denies.

Pope Benedict has said that uniting all Christians and healing the split is a "fundamental" priority of his pontificate.

The theological commission said it agreed in Ravenna that Rome occupied the "first place" in canonical order of the ancient seats of bishops - including Constantinople, Alexandria, Antioch and Jerusalem.

The commission said it agreed "that the bishop of Rome was therefore the 'protos' (first in ancient Greek) among the patriarchs."

Vatican hails "step" to healing Orthodox rift
Source: Reuters

15 November 2007 – The Vatican has praised an agreement between Roman Catholic and Orthodox theologians as a first step towards a possible healing of their millennium-long schism but said the road ahead was long and arduous.

The Vatican issued on Thursday a joint declaration agreed last month that said the Pope held the highest rank in the unified Church before the 1054 Great Schism -- a statement that could allow Catholics and Orthodox to work more closely.

Worldwide Orthodoxy is organized under national churches totaling some 220 million members, compared to the 1.1 billion Roman Catholics who all come under the Vatican's authority.

Kasper said the Orthodox-Catholic talks would next tackle the role of the Pope in the pre-schism Church. Benedict has said this model, which was more decentralized than today's papacy, could help Catholics and Orthodox work together more closely.

But they would then have to discuss more contentious issues from the second millennium, during which the papacy became a powerful, centralized institution and the Pope was declared infallible when he makes decisions on faith and morals.

Comments:
One of the mysteries that have baffled theologians and bible prophecy students is the identity of the false prophet. Many Christians believe that the false prophet will most likely be a Pope from Rome and this seems to be the majority view.

This second beast has two horns like a lamb and if this beast is a religious figure, the two horns could represent his religious authority just the same as the first beast (The Antichrist) that has 10 horns ( are Kingdoms) which will receive power with the beast for a period of 3 ˝ years.

If the Orthodox and Catholic churches unite, that would be quite a feat after a 1000 year old split. Keep in mind that the Eastern Orthodoxy is the second largest Christian communion in the world after the Roman Catholic Church. Could these be the two horns like a lamb? It is worth watching for sure.

Remember that in December the EU treaty will be signed and this could signify the rising of the beast from the sea, the European Union with the Antichrist. If this is the case we need to watch out for the other beast with two horns like a lamb that may also be rising. We will find out soon.

Keep an eye on the Catholic and Christian Orthodox union and the summit in November (below), the EU treaty signing in December and Annapolis summit in less than two weeks.

Note: The Pope summoned all the cardinals of the world to a summit which will take place on November 23, and on that occasion the agenda will be exactly the ecumenism. The Catholic-Orthodox document will be the base of the debate, the Italian daily Repubblica reported on Wednesday. Article Here

Re 13:11 ¶ And I beheld another beast coming up out of the earth; and he had two horns like a lamb, and he spake as a dragon.

Re 17:12 And the ten horns which thou sawest are ten kings, which have received no kingdom as yet; but receive power as kings one hour with the beast.
