Third earthquake in a week shakes Israel
Source: Herald Tribune

24 November 2007 – A light earthquake shook Israel overnight, rattling nerves rather than causing injury. It was the third earthquake to hit Israel this week, none of which caused property damage or casualties.

The latest tremor occurred early Saturday morning, and had a magnitude of 4.2, the Geophysical Institute of Israel said. On Tuesday, there were two earthquakes, with magnitudes of 3.0 and 4.2.

Uri Frieslander, director of the Geophysical Institute told Israel Radio that, unusually, the epicenter in of Saturday's event had been near the town of Ramle, southeast of Tel Aviv, while most quakes occurred around the area of the Dead Sea.

Usually earthquakes in Israel have their origin in the Afro-Syrian rift, including the two earthquakes that hit Israel earlier this week.

On average, major earthquakes hit Israel once a century. Quakes have in the past harmed holy sites revered by Muslims, Christians and Jews in Jerusalem.

The last major earthquake to strike the area was in 1927, with a magnitude of more than 6, and killed 500 people.

Israeli experts believe that because of population growth and high-rise construction, an earthquake of the same magnitude today would kill more than 18,000 people.

However, Frieslander said Saturday's mild quake offered no indication of when to expect a larger earthquake.

Historic city takes a role in Mideast saga
Source: Reuters

26 November 2007 – This historic waterfront city takes a role in the long saga of the Middle East conflict this week when Israelis and Palestinians meet here to talk peace, but residents were more concerned about disruption of their own daily lives.

Annapolis, a former capital of the United States, was bracing for tight security and traffic jams to accompany Israeli Prime Minister Ehud Olmert and Palestinian President Mahmoud Abbas at the U.S.-brokered meeting.

"I will probably be a little more vigilant those days," said Ellen Schwanebeck, owner of the Dragonfly Garden shop on brick-lined Main Street in the historical part of town.

"But I'm not worried about bombs going off -- I think the people in charge of security will do their jobs," she added.

But several residents said most townspeople would likely try to stay away from the historic part of town near the U.S. Naval Academy where the talks will take place on Tuesday.

The U.S. Department of Homeland Security and the FBI issued a joint bulletin to law enforcement urging vigilance during the peace talks. The bulletin warns of the possible threat of a "lone-wolf terrorist" and cites a handful of extremist organizations.

Comments: Tomorrow (Today) the largest peace gathering in seven years will take place in Annapolis Maryland. This is the starting point for future negotiations and the goal of a peace deal and a two state solution in Israel. We know that the core issues on the table (the West Bank, Jerusalem and the Temple Mount) have never been resolved in any past, so why should this meeting be any different that all the other attempts to make peace? It may take some time but I believe that a false peace is just around the corner due to all the prophetic signs of the times we are witnessing today. Yes, Annapolis is just the start of negotiations but this time the parties are determined and won’t stop until a deal is reached. Annapolis is the beginning of the end game.

Meanwhile, Israel is starting to rumble. According to the article above a major earthquake strikes Israel 1 in 100 years.  What are the chances that a major earthquake will strike now that peace negotiations are gearing up or sometime afterwards? The odds of that happening are enormous. Keep an eye on it…and the holy sites.
