18 November 2007 – Officials say up to 10,000 people are dead and millions homeless and hungry in cyclone-hit Bangladesh, as the army and aid workers battled to reach the devastated coast.
Three days after cyclone Sidr tore into one of the world's poorest nations from the Bay of Bengal, rescue workers were still fighting their way through a landscape of flattened villages and traumatised crowds.
The chairman of the Bangladeshi Red Crescent Society, the country's central humanitarian organisation, said 3,000 bodies had already been recovered.
He said the death toll "may cross 5,000, but it will remain below 10,000".
Red Cross and Red Crescent workers said they were using their network of volunteers to distribute dried food and plastic sheeting for temporary shelters, but that many helpers were themselves victims.
"Our estimate is that 900,000 families are affected," Red Cross official Shafiquzzaman Rabbani said.
That figure amounts to roughly seven million people - no small task for the army helicopters and Navy ships sent out to distribute food, medicine and relief materials.
Survivors on the isolated southern coast, where many areas were still out of reach for aid convoys, warned they would soon die unless help arrived.
"I lost six of my family members in the cyclone. I am afraid that the rest three of us will die of hunger. We are without food and water for the last few days," 55-year-old farmer Sattar Gazi said.
"For the corpses, we don't even have clothes to wrap them in for burial ... we are wrapping the bodies in leaves," he told AFP in a village situated on the Bay of Bengal coastline and smashed by a six-metre high tidal wave.
Abdul Zabbar, a 50-year-old teacher, said the situation in the area, already one of the most impoverished places on Earth, was unbearable.
"There is no food and drinking water. Bodies are still floating in the rivers and paddy fields," he said, adding the rice harvest - or four months of food - had been washed away.

18 November 2007 – Pollution in the seas is now speeding global warming, says a devastating new climate report. 'IoS' Environment Editor Geoffrey Lean reports from Valencia.
Humanity is rapidly turning the seas acid through the same pollution that causes global warming, the world's governments and top scientists agreed yesterday. The process – thought to be the most profound change in the chemistry of the oceans for 20 million years – is expected both to disrupt the entire web of life of the oceans and to make climate change worse.
The warning is just one of a whole series of alarming conclusions in a new report published by the official Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change (IPCC), which last month shared the Nobel Peace Prize with former US vice president Al Gore.
Drawn up by more than 2,500 of the world's top scientists and their governments, and agreed last week by representatives of all its national governments, the report also predicts that nearly a third of the world's species could be driven to extinction as the world warms up, and that harvests will be cut dramatically across the world.

Comments: We know that global warming is having a profound effect on the world’s climate but is there anything we can do to stop it?
It might already be too late to change the degrading process that seems to be out of control. The cyclone in Bangladesh is another example of changing weather patterns and it won’t be the last. I believe that Global warming is real but it is not a coincident of man made failure it is a product of end time events. Jesus told us that near the end of our age there would be distress of nations, famine, and pestilences and that before he returns mankind would be living as the days of Noah were, before the flood came. The wickedness of man was great in the earth in those days and mankind is no different today… so shall also the coming of the Son of man be.
It is time to get our house in order.
Mt 24:37 But as the days of Noe were, so shall also the coming of

until the day that Noe entered into the ark, 39 And knew not until
