EU Pushing Energy Cooperation With Central Asia
Source: RFE
10 October 2007 – European Union foreign policy chief Javier Solana is in Kazakhstan today as part of a Central Asian tour to promote cooperation between the region and the EU, particularly in the field of energy resources.
Speaking in the Kazakh capital, Astana, Solana said the EU supports
construction of a trans-Caspian natural-gas pipeline, calling it an
important project.
"It's a project that has to be implemented," Solana said. "Of course, we have to find...the companies to [realize] that part of the pipeline that still doesn't exist. As you know, one of the problems of gas from this region is how to get it out into Europe and, without a doubt, the trans-Caspian route could be one important possibility."
Solana was in Turkmenistan on October 9, where he also promoted energy cooperation with the EU and the construction of the trans-Caspian pipeline.
Solana said he hoped the current difficulties between the Kazakh government and the Italian-led international consortium operating Kazakhstan's vast Kashagan oil field in the Caspian Sea would soon be resolved.
…
Solana said regional security was also a topic in talks with Kazakh officials. Solana added that events in Afghanistan and Iran were part of the discussion, though he did not elaborate.
EU Supports Palestinian Right Of Return
Source: The Post Chronicle
10 October 2007 – An EU spokeswoman said Wednesday in Brussels that negotiations between Israel and the Palestinians must include the right of return.
Christiane Hohmann told Israeli reporters that the European Union supports the Arab initiative in full, including the right of return of Palestinian refugees, Ynetnews reported Wednesday.
Hohmann, when asked if the EU supports an Israeli withdrawal from the Golan Heights as part of the Arab initiative, said the body is in favor of all relevant U.N. resolutions.
The spokeswoman also said the solution to the conflict in the Middle East should stem from within the region. She called for the Arab League to become involved in the peace process alongside the United States and the European Union.
Hohmann said a number
of EU officials will be involved in the upcoming peace summit in
Maryland, including High Representative for the Common Foreign
and Security Policy Javier Solana and European Commissioner
for External Relations and European Neighborhood Policy Benita
Ferrero-Waldner.
Comments: If there is an important meeting or a major summit going on somewhere in the world, it seems like Javier Solana is always there in attendance. If you read the article from yesterday then you would remember that Europe wants to bypass Russia and transport Oil through Turkey, from the Caspian Sea region. In order to get what Europe needs they naturally send their top negotiator Javier Solana to resolve the issues. This includes attending the Middle East peace summit in Maryland next month and resolving that problem which has plagued the region for years. Naturally, European Neighborhood Policy Commissioner Benita Ferrero-Waldner will also attend the summit since both Israel and the PA are part of the ENP. Both of these two areas (The Caspian & Middle East) are important in end time prophecy and it is important to keep an eye on what takes place in both regions.
Note: Once the EU treaty comes into force, (External relations commissioner) Benita Ferrero-Waldner’s job will be taken over by the EU foreign minister who will speak with one voice for the European Union.
