Baltics: Regional Energy Conference Looks For Alternatives To Russia
Source: RFE
09
October 2007
–
Several Eastern European states start a two-day meeting with
energy-rich Caspian basin nations on October 10 to discuss
energy-supply alternatives to Russia.
The participants at the conference in Vilnius include the presidents of Lithuania, Latvia, Poland, Ukraine, Azerbaijan, Romania, and Georgia, as well as high-ranking officials from Estonia, Kazakhstan, Turkey, and the EU.
Birute Vesaite, the head of the Lithuanian parliamentary committee on economics, said the summit's aim is to find alternative energy supplies and routes to improve energy security and reduce the Eastern European countries' dependence on a single supplier -- Russia.
Russia is widely accused of using energy to increase its political power, especially in its neighboring countries, including the Baltic states and Poland. That's why Russia itself will be present at the conference on a lower diplomatic level than other participants, according to Tomas Janeliunas, an analyst at the Lithuanian Institute of Foreign Relations.
"This summit is being organized to find means to transport energy resources from the countries of the Caspian Sea by bypassing Russia, and to create an alternative supply network, which will be used by Poland and other Baltic states," Janeliunas said.
Putin to attend Caspian summit in Tehran
Source: News Monsters
09 October 2007 – President Vladimir Putin is slated to attend the 2nd Summit of Caspian States in the Iranian capital Tehran on October 16, amid international controversy over Iran's nuclear programme, Kremlin spokesman Dimtri Peskov told Deutsche Presse-Agentur dpa Monday.
Any official visit by Putin to Iran is certain to excite international attention, with growing fears in the west that Iranian President Mahmoud Ahmadinejad plans to build nuclear weapons at the Bushehr atomic power plant which Russia has helped to build.
Russia has repeatedly pushed back the start-up date for the plant, citing delays in payments from Tehran. Iranian officials deny any payment issues and claim the technology is for civilian use only.
Observers comment that Russia has delayed deliveries of fuel to the Bushehr power plant because it does not fully trust Iranian Ahmadinejad and fears an international backlash.
…
The geopolitical significance of the region has increased with Europe's plan to diversify its energy resources with a pipeline along the seabed to carry gas from Central Asia through Turkey bypassing Russia.
Meanwhile energy is also at the top of the agenda when Putin travels to Germany for meetings with Chancellor Angela Merkel toward the end of the week.
Turkey prepares for cross-border operation into northern Iraq
Source: Jpost
09 October2007 – In a move that could lead to an invasion of northern Iraq, Turkey's government has decided to seek parliamentary authorization for a cross-border military operation to chase separatist Kurdish rebels who operate from bases in the area, a party official said Tuesday.
The government did not say it had decided to launch such an operation. In the past Turkey has carried out smaller-scale "hot pursuit" operations that officials say do not require parliamentary approval.
There are widespread fears - in Baghdad and among its American and other allies - that a Turkish incursion could destabilize an area of Iraq that has escaped much of the violence that has persisted in the center and south of the country.
The decision was taken during a three-hour meeting between Erdogan and officials from his ruling party, said a party official who was at the meeting. He asked not to be named because he was not authorized to speak to reporters. It was not clear when the bill would come to the floor, but the government wanted the measure to pass "as soon as possible," the official said.
Earlier, the government said it had begun preparations for a military operation into Iraq in pursuit of the rebels, after deadly attacks on soldiers in recent days that outraged the Turkish public.
…
In the last 10 days, more than two dozen people - soldiers and civilians - were killed in southeastern Turkey in attacks by PKK rebels. The group, labeled a terrorist one by the US and the European Union, has fought the government forces since 1984 in a fight that claimed tens of thousands of lives.
Comments: The Caspian Basin is (like the article mentions) is a geopolitical significant region and it is full of oil and gas. I have covered this area in other articles, outlining the importance of this region in end time events. The nations surrounding the Caspian Sea, plus Russia, Iran and other counties will all be allied together in the invasion of Israel that Eze. 38 & 39 describes.
Now that energy is strategically important and to meet the needs of supply and demand, all the countries that have an interest in this vast resource are meeting and jockeying for positions. Europe in particular wants to bypass Russia and go through Turkey (Map) and you can bet that Russia will have lots to say about that if it looks like they will lose that critical EU market.
The first meeting will be on Oct 10th in Vilnius followed by a summit on Oct 16th in Tehran, which Vladimir Putin is scheduled to attend. This will raise eyebrows in the west but Vladimir doesn’t mind that, he has his eye on the oil.
In the last article, Turkey looks like it just might invade Northern Iraq. Turkey has a powerful military and has just about had enough of the PKK so an invasion is not out of the question. Ankara has been planning an invasion all this year and has 200,000 troops in staging areas near Iraq's border since May. There has also been shelling by Turkish artillery into Kurdish bases across the border. Kurdish guerrillas know what is coming and have prepared themselves for heavy fighting and not just with Turkish forces but also with Iranian since Kurdish groups have also attacked inside Iran's Kurdish areas.
So, keep an eye on the Caspian summits and any military moves by Turkey and possibly Iran.
