Wildfires fueled
by Santa Ana winds continue to burn out of control across Southern
California. San Diego County officials have ordered mass evacuations
as new fires Monday added to the more than 40 thousand acres
scorched over the weekend.
The Santa Ana wind event began on Saturday when a strong pressure
gradient developed between high pressure over Utah and lower
pressure over the Pacific Ocean. Winds have gusted past hurricane
force across the high desert and in the passes and canyons along
the Pacific Coast from Ventura County to San Diego County.
San Diego Mayor Jerry Sanders tells Associated Press the city has
opened Qualcomm Stadium and the Del Mar Fairgrounds as shelters for
evacuees forced to leave their homes. San Diego County Sheriff Bill
Kolender says the fire "...will probably
be the worst fire this county has ever seen."
Late Sunday, Gov. Arnold Schwarzenegger declared a state of
emergency in seven counties. Early this morning, several new fires
began in San Diego county, threatening thousands of homes in
Southern California. The strong winds in San Diego County are
keeping firefighting helicopters grounded while the blazes rage out
of control.

22 October 2007 – For more than five months, the lake that provides drinking water to almost five million people here has been draining away in a withering drought. Sandy beaches have expanded into flats of orange mud. Tree stumps not seen in half a century have resurfaced. Scientists have warned of impending disaster.
And life has, for the most part, gone on just as before.
The response to the worst drought on record in the Southeast has unfolded in ultra-slow motion. All summer, more than a year after the drought began, fountains blithely sprayed, football fields were watered, prisoners got two showers a day and Coca-Cola’s bottling plants chugged along at full strength. In early October, on an 81-degree day, an outdoor theme park began to manufacture what was intended to be a 1.2-million gallon mountain of snow.
Comments: Unprecedented weather is top news in the United States tonight. Drought in the Southeast and West are taking a huge toll and live pictures are being shown on the TV of lakes drying up in Georgia to the firestorms ripping across Southern California. Millions of people are affected by these disasters and right now there are hundreds of thousands of people who have been evacuated in California. The people there need our prayer and our hearts go out to them. Hopefully they will get a break from the winds and a pile of rain in the near future. I’m sure everyone is watching this developing story.

EuroMed meeting constructive, EU trade commissioner says

22 October 2007 – The European Union (EU)'s trade commissioner Peter Mandelson said here Sunday that the EU's ties with Mediterranean nations had strengthened at the sixth EuroMed Conference.
The meeting brought together Europe's 27 member nations with Algeria, Egypt, Israel, Jordan, Lebanon, Morocco, the Palestinian Authority, Syria, Tunisia and Turkey; with Libya as an observer. Its goal was the creation of a free trade area.
At the conference, Egypt, Morocco and Israel restated their willingness to begin free trade talks, Mandelson said, adding that Egypt had announced that it was willing to sign agreements on services and also rights to set up businesses.
Manuel Pinho, Portugal's economy and innovation minister who co-presided the conference, said the work would focus on evaluating integration initiative studies and existing negotiations between the two regions.
"Our objective is to create a free trade agreement in 2010
that will serve a market of
750 million people,"
he said.
Comments: It looks like the EU and the Euromed countries have had another successful conference. The 27 EU members and 10 Mediterranean countries are still determined to create a free trade zone by 2010. I have covered the ENP and Euromed quite frequently in the past and believe that this partnership could possibly be the Covenant with many that the Antichrist confirms in Daniel 9:27
