Aftershocks follow 8.4 quake in Sumatra
Source: Radio New
Zealand
12 September 2007 – Aftershocks have followed a severe earthquake that shook Indonesia's Sumatra region on Wednesday, destroying buildings and killing at least two people.
The 8.4 magnitude earthquake struck at 6:10pm (1110 GMT) on Wednesday; on the eve of the Muslim fasting month of Ramadan.
Indonesia's meteorological agency said the quake's epicentre was 159km southwest of Bengkulu. It was also felt in Singapore, Thailand and Malaysia.
The two main cities that were worst hit, Bengkulu and Padang, have a total population of about two million people.
Indonesia's National Disaster Management Office says there is extensive damage to buildings along Sumatra's coast.
Some buildings collapsed in Padang, the capital of West Sumatra; Metro TV said some buildings had caught fire.
Indonesia issued two tsunami warnings, one after the first quake, and another after a smaller tremor a few hours later in the same area. However, the Indonesian warnings and most others in the region had been lifted by 1900 GMT on Wednesday.
Several big aftershocks hit the region.
The head of the health ministry crisis centre in Jakarta, said the government would send one tonne of medicine, three tonnes of food supplements, and one tonne of noodles on Thursday for displaced people.
An official at Indonesia's meteorological agency said gauges measured a wave surge of one metre after the first quake.
A huge earthquake on 26
December, 2004, caused a massive tsunami and over 230,000 deaths
across Indian Ocean.
Aftershock triggers new tsunami alert

Japan's Meteorological Agency issued a tsunami warning for Indonesia, Australia, India and Sri Lanka today after another powerful earthquake rocked the south of Sumatra island.
"There is a possibility of a destructive regional tsunami in the Indian Ocean," the agency said in a statement, adding that the Indian Ocean coasts of Sumatra and Java and Australia's Cocos Islands could be affected within an hour.
It said all coasts of India's Andaman and Nicobar Islands and all coasts of Sri Lanka could be affected between one to three hours.
The US Geological Survey
(USGS) said the quake, which came about
14 hours after another powerful tremor in the same area, measured
7.5. It had earlier put its strength at 7.9.
Indonesia also issued a third tsunami warning in the past 24 hours, the meteorology office said.
The World Health Organization has confirmed an outbreak of the deadly Ebola virus in Kasai province, a remote area of the Democratic Republic of the Congo.
But the number of deaths directly related to the virus is unclear.
WHO says 372 people have
fallen ill in the region since the end of April, and at least 166 of
them have died.
Comments: Two huge earthquakes off the coast of Indonesia again and this is sure to rattle the nerves of Indonesians for quite some time. The last quake in 2004 killed hundreds of thousands of people with the Tsunami it generated and they are still recovering. This latest quake does not help their situation at all. To make matters worse, Indonesians were preparing for their holy month of Ramadan the next day and Indonesia has the largest Muslim population in the world. The DRC is reporting a new outbreak of the EBOLA virus and this outbreak is looking to be worse than the last one in 1995. Jesus told us that events like these would increase as we come closer to his return. Many Christians have linked the handing over of Israeli territory (Gaza and now the West Bank) to the Palestinians as a catalyst and a reason for a spike in these events. Let’s keep an eye on these events as the next big summit is November and Jerusalem and the West Bank will also be on the table.
Lu 21:11 And great earthquakes shall be in divers places, and famines, and pestilences; and fearful sights and great signs shall there be from heaven.
