Israel 'prepared' for conflict after Syria alleges IAF flyover
Source: Jpost

06 September 2007 – Israel is "fully prepared" for the possibility of a conflict in the North, defense officials said late Thursday, after Syria alleged it had fired on a pre-dawn IAF flight over the coastal city of Latakia.

The IDF officially refused to comment on reports from Syria that its air defenses fired on a formation of IAF warplanes that entered Syrian airspace from the Mediterranean.

In addition, fears mounted that Hizbullah would use the escalating tensions along the Golan Heights as an excuse to initiate its own conflict with Israel.

Despite these fears, troops and tanks were not massing in the North, and the top defense brass carried on with their regular schedules, attempting to broadcast an air of "business as usual." The IDF's Northern Command released a statement reassuring northern residents that there was "no cause for concern."

Syrian Vice President Farouk Shara, speaking in Italy, said his country was not interested in being drawn into a war with Israel.

Syrian officials reported Thursday afternoon that at around 1 a.m., four or five IAF aircraft broke the sound barrier and dropped fuel tanks over deserted areas in northern Syria, along its border with Turkey. Witnesses said the incident occurred in the Abyad area.

Comments:  This is may not look like an escalation of tensions but as we have seen before in the Middle East, one incident can lead to another and before you know it there is a full blown war taking place. The “Abyad area” in Syria is almost half way across the country in the North. It is just my guess but this is also the shortest route Israel would take if it was going to strike Iran. Israel was most likely probing Syrian air defence and taking a good look to see what kind of response (if any) they would get from Syria in the event they were detected. Most articles are reporting that fuel tanks were dropped from the Israeli aircraft and that as many as 5 aircraft were in the group. Here is a map where the incident took place. Map Look for the plane in Northern Syria and this is the Abyad area as the article mentions. The next few days will be interesting to watch and see if there is any response from Syria. All indications seem to point to some kind of conflict taking place in the Middle East soon. Isa. 17:1 may not be far off.

Isa 17:1 ¶ The burden of Damascus. Behold, Damascus is taken away from being a city, and it shall be a ruinous heap.

Peres visits Benedict XVI
Source: Haaretz

06 September 2007 – ROME - Pope Benedict XVI and President Shimon Peres discussed peace efforts in the Middle East yesterday, with the Vatican saying the time seemed particularly favorable for Israelis and Palestinians to work to end decades of conflict.

Peres renewed an invitation to Benedict to visit the Holy Land during the meeting at the pontiff's summer retreat at Castel Gandolfo, in the hills south of Rome, a Vatican statement said

Shortly after the meeting, Benedict held talks on the Middle East situation with the Saudi foreign minister, Prince Saud al-Faisal.

It wasn't clear if the timing was a coincidence, but the meetings, which followed one between the pope and the Syrian vice president on Wednesday, came amid a flurry of diplomatic initiatives on the Middle East.

A Vatican statement said the pope and Peres discussed recent talks between the Israeli and Palestinian leadership. It said the two expressed hope that both sides would take advantage of the current international context that seems particularly favorable, and make any effort to respond to the expectations of the people, worn down by a crisis that has lasted for 60 years.

Comments:  Not sure how involved the Pope will be in the Middle East peace process but this is certainly something to keep an eye on over the next while. There is lots of activity on the diplomatic front these days in the Middle East and no shortage of high level players trying to get their hand into the pie. There has not been this much activity in the peace process in quite a long time. President Peres is sure making the rounds in his ceremonial position and it would almost seem like he has taken over the Foreign Minister position again. I think the only reason why the Israeli public is not speaking out like it should is because Peres has been in the public eye for decades. Peres should not be involved with the peace process since he lost the labour leadership race but he manoeuvred around that by taking up this current post presidential post. He won’t stop until the West Bank is in Palestinian hands. Keep an eye on Peres.
