Safeguard the Temple Mount

10 September 2007 – On Sunday, the Committee to Prevent the Destruction of Temple Mount Antiquities (CPDTMA) petitioned the High Court of Justice to stop the Wakf, the Muslim religious trust to which Israel has delegated substantial control over the Temple Mount, from using tractors to dig a deep, half-kilometer long trench into the most sensitive archeological, religious and historical site in Israel. Today, we hope the court will issue an immediate injunction to stop this travesty.

That Muslim authorities have been given a great degree of authority over the Temple Mount is an important manifestation of our national commitment to freedom of religion. Such freedom, however, must not include the right to trample other principles, such as the illegality of violence, the need to preserve an archeological heritage of great significance to Judaism, Islam and Christianity and to multiple scientific disciplines, and the imperative to safeguard freedom of the press.
The Temple Mount, moreover, is not "just" an archeological site. It is the place that Jews have literally turned to, three times a day, for more than 2,000 years. It is the Zion to which the Jewish people have returned. For a Jewish state to neglect its national and international responsibility to protect this place is beyond embarrassing; it reflects a profound absence of self-respect and a failure to fathom a basic requirement for our existence in this land.
Comments: The digging (by the Wakf) on the Temple Mount continues and on such a sensitive area you would think that this travesty should have never started if the Israeli government had put their foot down in the first place. It wasn’t long ago that Israel started to fix the Mugrabi gate - bridge leading to the Temple Mount and the whole Muslim world was ready to rumble. The Muslims claimed that the Al Aqsa mosque was in danger but what they were really afraid of was not the physically endanger al-Aqsa's foundations, but the tissue of lies proclaiming that the Jews have no valid historical roots in the city and its holy sites. The Muslim world does not want the Jews to lay claim to any of the Temple Mount when in fact the Jews had a history on the Mount centuries before the Muslims ever did. But the fact remains that the Israeli governement is overall in charge of security on the Temple Mount but do not want to offend their Muslim neibours by telling them they can’t dig up and dump priceless Jewish history into a heap of ruble. So the dig continues and the government allows it to continue. Any other government on earth would have put a stop to this travesty before it had begun. This is Israel we are talking about but only when they stand up to what is rightfully theirs will this nonsence stop once and for all.
