Bolton: Attack Iran, 'remove' its leader
Source: JPost
30 September 2007 – Former US ambassador to the United Nations John Bolton told Tory delegates in Britain Sunday that efforts by the UK and the EU to negotiate with Iran had failed and that he saw no alternative to a pre-emptive strike on suspected nuclear facilities in the country.
Bolton said that
Iranian President Mahmoud
Ahmadinejad
was "pushing out" and "is not receiving adequate push-back" from the
West.
"I don't think the use of military force is an attractive option,
but I would tell you I don't know what the alternative is.
"Because life is about choices, I think we have to consider the use of military force. I think we have to look at a limited strike against their nuclear facilities."
He added that any strike should be followed by an attempt to remove the "source of the problem", Ahmadinejad.
"If we were to strike Iran it should be accompanied by an effort at regime change ... The US once had the capability to engineer the clandestine overthrow of governments. I wish we could get it back," he said.
Bolton said that the fact that only partial intelligence about Iran's nuclear activity existed should not be used as an excuse not to act.
"Intelligence can be
wrong in more than one direction... Responding after they (nuclear
devices) are used is unacceptable."
Bolton also said the UN was "fundamentally irrelevant".
28 September 2007 – In a sign that U.N. Security Council-based diplomacy is losing steam, a number of sources are reporting that a military strike against Iran's nuclear facilities may be imminent. France and America also are pushing for tighter economic sanctions against Tehran, without U.N. approval.
Yesterday's edition of Le Canard Enchaîné, a French weekly known for its investigative journalism, reported details of an alleged Israeli-American plan to attack Iran's nuclear facilities. The frontpage headline read: "A report sent to the Elysée — Putin tells Tehran: They're going to bomb you!"
The Saudi foreign minister, Prince Saud al-Faisal, also expressed concerns to reporters in New York that an attack on Iran might be imminent.
Like most stories in the French paper, the article was based on unnamed sources who said that in order to reduce casualties, the attack against Iran is planned for October 15, the end of the Muslim holy month of Ramadan. Israel would bomb the first targets while America would orchestrate a second wave of strikes, the report said.
Comments: Update; like the top article mentions, John Bolton is the “former US ambassador to the United Nations” and he is well informed on international matters. When John Bolton can think of no other alternative but to strike Iran, then there probably is no other alternative. Even though a strike might be necessary, I think this will only come when diplomacy and sanctions have failed.
According to reports, sanctions against Iran will wait because the six world powers involved in talks to persuade Iran to drop uranium enrichment, agreed on Friday to delay a vote until late November at the earliest. They are going to wait for reports by the International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA) and European Union negotiator Javier Solana. As we know, Javier Solana is also the spokesman for the six nations involved in the talks with Iran. The six nations involved are the five permanent Security Council members (China, the United States, Russia, the United Kingdom and France) plus Germany. Once these reports are in and more sanctions are imposed (in November) then a strike on Iran could be Imminent. The second article reports that a strike is planned for 15 October but I think that is just hearsay since a date for a military attack would never be leaked, supposedly. We will find out soon if that is correct. One thing we do know and that is…the war drums are getting louder.
We will continue to keep an eye on the Iran crisis because as I have mentioned before Iran it is the number one threat the world is facing today.
The ramifications of a war with Iran will be felt across the globe.
