Notice:  Due to family commitments, this will be Rick's last commentary for a few months.  He hopes to return in September.  Meantime, Leo has graciously agreed to tow the line alone until such time as the Lord brings another commentator to the ministry.  Both Leo and I believe that with the tensions as they are in the Middle East (and indeed in many other places in the world!) now is not the time to discontinue the ministry!

Rick - you will be missed!

Arab leaders invite Israel for holding direct talks
Source: Hindu

28 March 2007 – Arab leaders at their summit in Riyadh have invited Israel to open direct negotiations with them on the basis of a comprehensive land-for-peace plan.

The Arab peace plan first aired five years ago by King Abdullah bin Abdulaziz of Saudi Arabia promises normalisation of ties with Israel provided it vacates lands that it occupied during the 1967 Arab-Israeli war.

The plan calls for the emergence of an independent Palestinian state with Arab East Jerusalem as its capital.

Besides, it seeks a "just solution" to the problem created by the displacement of Palestinians from land, which is now Israel.

"The Palestinian people is sincere in extending its hand of peace to the Israeli people, and I call on that people and its leaders to share that dream with us," Palestinian President Mahmoud Abbas told the summit in a speech on Thursday.

The summit decided to form working groups, which will now try and canvass support for the initiative worldwide.

Without rejecting it, Israel is expressing reservations about the proposal, especially about the right of refugees to return and the status of East Jerusalem as the capital of a Palestinian State.

"I would say this: Let's conduct negotiations. You come with your positions, and we will come with ours," Israeli Deputy Prime Minister Shimon Peres told Israel Radio.

Comments:
Israel is now invited to hold direct talks with the Arab countries but the threat of war and violence is always hanging over their head. (article) Abbas warns of violence if "hand of peace" rejected. The Arab’s could never gain any land from Israel going to war so they have taken it upon themselves to gain the land through a peace deal. As I have covered many times in the past we know that this peace will never work. Hamas and Hezbollah have no intention of making peace with Israel and Israel has never gained any peace by giving land away to their enemies. Withdrawal from Gaza and the buffer zone in Lebanon only brought Israel war and terror in return.

Turkey back at EU's negotiating table

Source: EU Observer

28 March 2007 – The EU has agreed to open a new chapter of Turkey's negotiating package - only the second since Ankara started talks in October 2005 – amid Turkish irritation at the recent European summit in Berlin.

Turkish government representatives will on Thursday (29 March) officially kick off negotiations on the enterprise and industry chapter after EU member states agreed to the move on Tuesday.

The agreement was preceded by a clash between some member states and the German EU presidency after Berlin introduced additional hurdles for Turkey based on French demands, without sounding out other member states' positions, according to Turkish paper Zaman.

Apart from slow progress on EU talks, Turkish media have indicated that Ankara is feeling miffed by the negative political messages from top European leaders.

Most recently, the country's politicians expressed their disappointment at not being invited to the Berlin summit, held last weekend, to celebrate the Union's 50th birthday.

"If the EU has negative thoughts about Turkey, it should make its decision so that we can continue on our own road. Let's not waste money or energy," prime minister Recep Tayyip Erdogan said on Tuesday, according to press reports.

A gift by German chancellor Angela Merkel to French president Jacques Chirac to mark his departure from the European stage - a mug commemorating an 18th century Ottoman forces defeat by Napoleon in Egypt – has also caused some irritation in Turkey.

Comments: Update; just when you think that the European Union had washed its hands with Turkey, the EU is back at the negotiating table holding Turkey by the string again. In the last negotiations Turkey refused to allow Cypriot traffic into Turkish ports and talks eventually broke down over this roadblock. Cyprus is an EU member state and naturally the EU has to take the side with its EU member and sent Turkey adrift. Turkey is an important country to the EU and doesn’t know what to do with it, they don’t want Turkey gaining EU membership and they don’t want them going on their own road away from the EU either. Only time will tell how these new negotiations will play out but if they are anything like the last 10 years of negotiations, these talks discussing EU membership will end at a dead end road.

Stunning admission by female British sailor

Source: CNN.com

March 29, 2007 -- The lone female British sailor, detained with 14 male sailors and marines by Iran last week, has written a letter to her parents "admitting" that her crew entered into Iranian waters, according to a letter released by the Iranian government.

CNN cannot confirm the letter was written by the female sailor, Faye Turney. The note was handed to the British ambassador in Tehran on Wednesday.

An Iranian television station also broadcast the first video of Turney, in which she smoked a cigarette as she spoke with someone off camera. She wore a black scarf covering her head.

The video also showed some of the other British detainees eating. All appeared to be in good health.

The letter said she regretted entering Iranian waters in the Persian Gulf.

"We were out in the boats when we were arrested by Iranian forces as we had apparently gone into Iranian waters. I wish we hadn't because then I'd be home with you all right now. I am so sorry we did, because I know we wouldn't be here now if we hadn't," the letter released by Iran said.

The television station also broadcast video of what appeared to be a hand-written letter, signed "Faye."

The British government protested Iran's broadcast of the captured crew as "completely unacceptable," Associated Press reported.

The pictures come after Iran's foreign minister has told CNN that Turney would be freed Wednesday or Thursday.

She was seized last Friday by Iran along with 14 other British Royal Navy sailors and marines who were conducting a routine inspection of a merchant vessel at the northern end of the Persian Gulf.

No other details were given about her possible release. Iranian Foreign Minister Manouchehr Mottaki's comments came Wednesday as he attended the Arab League Summit in Riyadh, Saudi Arabia.

Earlier Wednesday Britain increased pressure on Iran, releasing evidence it said showed the group was operating in Iraqi waters and freezing bilateral contacts until the crisis is resolved. Iran insists the group was inside its territorial waters.

"We are now in a new phase of diplomatic activity," British Foreign Secretary Margaret Beckett told members of parliament.

"We need to focus all our bilateral efforts during this phase to resolution of this issue," she added. "We will therefore be imposing a freeze on all other official bilateral business with Iran until this situation is resolved."

Comments:  I suspect the female sailor was coerced (under the threat of torture and/or death) into admitting guilt.  If that was the case, so much for Islam being a peaceful religion.  Under intense pressure from her Iranian captors and probably isolated from her fellow seamen, she broke down and aside from giving out only her name and serial number, she blurted out a fabricated lie or perhaps the truth.

Look at Great Britain today.  How the mighty has fallen!  It used to be that “the sun never sets on the British Empire”.  So powerful was she that all nations were in awe of her.  Even czarist Russia and Nazi Germany respected the military capability of the “lion” that was the British Isles.  Her young lions (the U.S., Canada, Australia), although they had left the den, would still look up to their mother.  You didn’t dare mess with the Brits!  Britain took matter into her own hands when Argentina invaded the Falkland Islands in 1982.  Now look at her.  She can only mutter a mild protest against the Persians. Ezekiel 38:[13] Sheba, and Dedan, and the merchants of Tarshish, with all the young lions thereof, shall say unto thee, Art thou come to take a spoil? hast thou gathered thy company to take a prey? to carry away silver and gold, to take away cattle and goods, to take a great spoil? Where is the once vaulted British military?  Why hasn’t it send its warships and fighter jets to the Persian Gulf Region and demand the release of the captured sailors by issuing an ultimatum, i.e. release them immediately or incur the wrath of the entire British Commonwealth?  It’s so sad to see a long-in-the tooth lioness staggering just to get up let alone fight the hyenas that have taken her cubbies.  You begin to wonder about the role Great Britain will have, if any, in the last days.

Saudi king criticizes Arab divisiveness

Source: Associated Press

March 29, 2007 -- The Saudi king chastised Arab leaders for infighting and said their divisions have fueled turmoil around the Mideast, prodding them to take united action at a summit Wednesday aimed at reviving a peace offer to Israel.

The gathering is to revive a 2002 initiative offering Israel peace with the Arab world if it withdraws from lands it seized in the 1967 Mideast war - a proposal the United States and Europe hope can bolster efforts to resume the stalled peace process.

Arab leaders have refused calls for changes in the plan to win Israeli acceptance, but U.S. allies Egypt, Saudi Arabia and Jordan want the summit participants to give them flexibility in promoting the offer to Israel and the West.

Saudi King Abdullah opened the summit with a strongly worded speech, painting a bleak picture of the crises and bloodshed in the region - Lebanon, Iraq and Sudan - and lecturing the leaders that it was time to act.

"The real blame should be directed at us, the leaders of the Arab nation," he said. "Our constant disagreements and rejection of unity have made the Arab nation lose confidence in our sincerity and lose hope."

Comments:  The Saudi king hit it right on the nail when he blamed Arab disunity for Israel maintaining her continual existence and powerful presence in the Middle East.  Saddam Hussein once boasted he could rally some 5 millions troops to overrun the Jewish State.  He could muster a handful of relatives and in-laws.  When you consider the fact that the Arabs outnumber the Jews 600 to 1, the Arab world could have easily squashed Israel just you would an ant, but the constant internal bickering among Muslims has benefited Israel to no end.  Genesis 16:[12] [And he (Ishmael) will be a wild man; his hand will be against every man, and every man's hand against him {Arab disunity}; and he shall dwell in the presence of all his brethren.] tells us that it was God who placed this disunity in Ishmael’s (the father of the Arabs) descendants.

The Saudis (no doubt influenced by the U.S.) are attempting to facilitate Middle East peace, but their Muslim brethren have deep seated disagreements which they will not set aside.   The oil rich Saudis will try to use their immense wealth and power to entice the dissenters into seeing the light of “peace”.  Many will buckle under the lure of all those billions of euros coming their way so that they will set aside (temporarily that is) their differences and embrace the Saudi Plan.  Once the hurdles have been overcome, it’s all up to the Israelis.  After the Rapture event, the Antichrist (AC) will cast his piercing eyes at the Jewish prime minister and with a gold plated fountain pen in his right hand, the AC will thrust it onto him to affix his John Henry signature on the Middle East peace treaty parchments.

Israelis abruptly cancel Vatican negotiating session

Source: www.cwnews.com

March 28, 2007 -- An Israeli delegation has pulled out of a scheduled negotiating session with Vatican representatives, the AsiaNews service report.

The abrupt cancellation of the talks, scheduled for March 29, comes as a severed blow to Vatican diplomats, who had been hoping for progress toward a long-overdue agreement establishing the legal rights of the Church in the Holy Land.

The withdrawal is the latest in a long series of delays in talks toward a final pact -- an agreement that was promised as part of the "fundamental accord" that paved the way for Vatican recognition of Israeli in 1993.

Comments:  You don’t back out of a scheduled meeting with the pope and expect to get away with it scot-free, do you?  Pope Benedict is a very busy man to be stood up this way.  He’s got books to write, cardinals to select, Mass to preside over, etc.  The Israelis just left him holding the bag and he’s not a happy camper.  He’ll file this snub away into his cranium to be recalled in a soon coming day.

How important is it for Israel to be recognized by the Vatican?  It’s paramount for her acceptance into the world community.  Once isolated and castigated repeatedly by the U.N., the pope and the EU have recently made overtures to Israel to be assimilated.  Unlike the Borg who said in Star Trek, “Resistance is futile”, Israel gladly wants to be accepted.  That’s what makes this meeting cancellation so puzzling.  What has the Vatican done to prick the Israelis?  Perhaps the sense the pope is coddling up to the Palestinian unity government consisting of Fatah and Hamas.  Could it be that the pope hasn’t come out vocally against Jew hating Hamas?  Pope Benedict can only speculate what he did to offend the Jews.  He’s not a man of patience though because of his advanced age, the sands of time are not in his favor.

We do know that after the Rapture, Israel’s religious leaders will join in with the One World Religion headed up by the Romish church.  Whatever differences or hurt feelings these two parties have will all be forgotten in the name of religious unity.
